The Zen of Poetry is a guide to sensory writing with authentic meaning and story.

How to Write Poetry provides a quick series of lessons for weekend workshops and individuals at home. It’s intentionally concise, although extra tips are freely available in the Writing Life Blog on this site.

I believe that everyone who wishes to can write poetry, that in finding and expressing our inner voice, we unlock our essence.

This ebook is a compilation of the finely tuned workshops and lessons that have worked best in my many years teaching. Using the methods outlined in this publication, thousands of people at all levels of English from tremendously different backgrounds have emerged into poets and storytellers before my eyes.

The material can be used by individuals at home, in group settings at community centers and retreats, and in college and senior high school classrooms. It is ideal for teachers and students of creative writing, for mindfulness storytelling facilitators, participants and for anyone who wishes to write poetry.

Whether you want to write one haiku or become a multi-style poet, these chapters will take you through not only the steps of composing, but also specific editing techniques to refine your work.

We begin with meditative prompts to evoke your inner voice. As the chapters advance, classical terms and linguistics analysis are applied into concrete steps tailored to enhance the literary quality of every reader’s poems.

Lessons from a master.

Author Cynthia Sharp KNOWS poetry. Her work in prose and in verse reflect this. Learning from her expertise is a pleasure. I continue to hone my own writing as a result of this talented writer’s work – a good read and an invaluable resource!

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this book

Let me say first, I love this book. The setting gave me a feeling of calm, an inner peace. My body immediately became relaxed and ready to enjoy each oncoming phase. The Author’s suggestions not only soothed me but enlightened me as well. In silence, I became that student in the front row thirsting for more and more knowledge. The writer had the ability to bring the reader into her book allowing them to experience and enjoy.
I’m fast forwarding now and moving forward to a place that really intrigued me and that is a question that was put forth. I think one of the most profound questions I’ve heard and is present in this book, took me to a place of remembrance. I looked intently at that place suggested and was brought to an open arena filled with emotion, filled with saccharin beauty, with sadness, pain, torturing grief and to a place of explosive happiness. My body tingled as the memories resonated within me. I’m in awe, I’m soothed, I’m pleased and I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to visit the pages of this poetic majesty.5.0 out of 5 stars A true gem

I’ve always been a fan of poetry and creative writing. In the last couple weeks I’ve also started writing poetry myself, so I did a bit of research and decided to read Cynthia Sharp’s little book here. An excellent choice. The book is really useful for people who are just starting their “poetry career” and it’s got a lot good advice, examples and ideas. But I would say it can also be a good guide for people who are already on an advanced stage when it comes to poetry writing. Like another reviewer said, a true gem of a book!5.0 out of 5 stars Something for Everyone

A really useful book on how to write poetry, with some hands-on exercises. I have read and re-read this book three times. I now use it as a reference book, researching techniques and gathering inspiration for my writing. This book can be quite useful to those who are just trying to write their first poems, i.e. students-good advice, some nice examples, and plenty of ideas for writing. An excellent book.5.0 out of 5 stars Creative poetry

I do creative writing essays but not poetry. I got this book to venture into poetry writing and try my skills there. This book has run through the basics and explained the elements comprehensively. I like the approach using her own examples and the practice exercises the author places at each discussion. And now I am still trying the techniques taught in the book. It’s just a gem of book!
